Artistic Statement
"Art cannot change the world, but it can contribute to changing the consciousness and drives of the men and women who could change the world."- Herbert Marcuse
I am intrigued by movement with a deeper meaning, whether this meaning is informing the audience of occurring social injustices, evoking emotion or promoting self-healing. Ideally, the audience will continue the conversation provoked by the dance. Dance provides a subcortical message to the audience for change. Dance expresses social and political issues in a nonthreatening manner. A serious issue can be expressed and interpreted within a person’s comfort level or may challenge comfort levels therefore facilitating personal change.
Beauty in dance should be accessible to every person who wants to dance and every audience member who wants to appreciate the movement. I want the movements of the dance to take on a life of their own, in order to express ideas and emotions to the audience. I want the audience to connect their own experiences to the dance and to leave interpreting the message for themselves.
It is important to incorporate past experiences to integrate authentic movement and express oneself. Integrating ideas of dance movement therapy can add an additional layer. Movement can attack issues and feelings that cannot be expressed in words. The audience can relate to seeing the mind/body connection through the movement. Movement provides a bridge to personal change.
